Brazil plants illegal GM maize

Brazilian farmers are planting genetically modified maize illegally, a government Minister says. The Minister of Technology, Sergio Rezende, admitted the development in an interview with the national newspaper, Folha. The news comes before 11 government Ministries of the national biosafety council, the CNBS, meet to consider the authorisation of two GM maize products: Bayer CropScience's glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink and Monsanto's insect-resistant Guardian maize. The two gained provisional approval from the national technical biosafety commission, the CTNBio, last year (Agrow No 526, 23).
