EU farm output under threat

Plans to revise the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414) could lead to "dramatic" reductions in yields of key European crops, warns Italian research institute Nomisma. In a study commissioned by Syngenta and Bayer CropScience, Nomisma says that the European Commission's proposals will "significantly" reduce the availability of agrochemicals to European agriculture. One scenario predicts that yields could decline by 29% for wheat, 33% for potatoes, 20% for cereals and 10% for grapevines by 2020.
