Brazil OKs 1st genetically modified maize lines
Brazil has approved its first genetically modified maize lines for commercial planting. The country's first two GM maize crops will be Bayer CropScience's glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink (T25) and Monsanto's insect-resistant Guardian/Yieldgard (MON810) maize. The 11-Ministry national biosafety council, the CNBS, ratified the approvals this month by seven votes to four, the state news agency, Agencia Brasil, reports. The move follows last year's provisional approvals from the national technical commission for biosafety, the CTNBio (Agrow No 526, p 23).
