EU acts on Chinese genetically modified rice

The European Commission is to impose compulsory certification on imports of Chinese rice products to prevent the unapproved genetically modified insect-resistant Bt63 rice line from entering the EU. The emergency measures are in response to evidence that Bt63 is still present in imported products, despite an increase in testing by the Chinese authorities, the Commission says. Its plans were cleared by the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health earlier this month and will come into force on April 15th.
