Portugal winter cereal area jumps
Portugal's winter cereal crop area is to rise by more than a quarter this year, the official national statistics agency, Instituto Nacional de Estatistica Statistics Portugal, estimates. The major riser should be the soft wheat area with a 45% increase to 81,000 ha. That would also represent an 18% rise on the average area of the previous five years. The hard wheat area is expected to be up by 10% to just over 2,000 ha, against a 3,000 ha average for 2003-07.
