EU amends LLRICE601 controls

The European Commission has relaxed the emergency measures in place to detect Bayer CropScience's unauthorised genetically modified glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink rice, LLRICE601, in rice imports from the US. It has dropped the mandatory requirement for EU member states to test rice imports, in response to an undertaking by the US authorities to impose a new official sampling and certification scheme. The EU emergency measures started in 2006 following the discovery of LLRICE601 in US rice (Agrow No 504, p 5). The US has since authorised the GM line (Agrow No 509, p 14), but it does not have EU approval.
