Valent BioSciences in Chinese PGR pact

Sumitomo Chemical's US biopesticide and plant growth regulator (PGR) business, Valent BioSciences (Libertyville, Illinois), has signed a research agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Chengdu Institute of Biology (CIB). The five-year collaboration will focus on the role of the PGR, abscisic acid, in crop stress management and disease resistance. The partners believe that it will lead to commercial applications to overcome crop stress due to disease and other factors. Valent acquired development and marketing rights to the PGR from Chinese company Lomon Bio Technology in 2003 (Agrow No 417, p 2).
