EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) safety clearance for Monsanto's GM (genetically modified) sugar beet:

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given food safety clearance to genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant H7-1 sugar beet being developed by Monsanto and seed company KWS Saat. The companies have applied for EU approval for use of the GM line in food and animal feed. The UK is rapporteur member state. In its evaluation as part of the EU approval process, the EFSA concluded that use of the GM sugar beet is unlikely to have any adverse effect on human or animal health or the environment. Monsanto and KWS are also developing H7-1 sugar beet in North America, where commercialisation is expected in the next couple of years (Agrow No 488, p 19).
