EU copper research progresses

European research to find alternatives to using copper as a fungicide in organic fruit growing has achieved favourable results with sugar waste in the control of apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). Vinasse, a fermented waste product of the sugar processing industry, has been shown to reduce the formation of apple scab ascospores. Autumn application of vinasse at rates of 200-400 litres/ha resulted in a reduction of more than 95%. Vinasse is currently used on a small scale as a fertiliser in organic fruit growing.
