EU looks at agriculture reforms
The European Commission is to reduce quotas for sugar beet production before the sowing season starts in March. The Commission has decided to take action in view of the "insufficient" voluntary applications from growers to cut back on production. The Commission "regretted" the poor uptake, EU Commissioner Mariann Fischer-Boel told EU Agriculture Ministers at their meeting at the end of January. In December, the Commissioner called for more sugar beet producers to switch to other crops as part of an EU strategy to make the sector more competitive (Agrow No 509, p 9).
