Uruguay suspends GMO (genetically modified organism) approvals
Uruguay has suspended the processing of authorisation requests for genetically modified crops for 18 months. President Tabare Vazquez signed Decree 11654/2006, authorising the suspension, late last month. The Decree also establishes an inter-Ministerial working group to determine within one year a regulatory framework for GMOs. The participating Ministries are Agriculture, Health, the Economy and the Environment.
