UK GMO farmers need new tactics
UK farmers may have to employ new tactics to avoid a problem with volunteer herbicide-resistant weeds when growing genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops. The UK Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) gave the advice last month following a study to examine the impact of GM herbicide-tolerant crops on farming. It found that herbicide-tolerant weeds can be controlled but that farmers should consider numerous changes to do so. These include using different herbicides and monitoring fields regularly to capture weed growth.
