Monsanto seeks new Brazil deal
Monsanto is negotiating a new partnership with Brazilian researchers to develop genetically modified fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) resistant Bt maize. The armyworm is Brazil's main maize pest. The agreement sought is with the Brazilian agricultural research corporation, the Embrapa. A deal could lead to the marketing of Bt maize in three or four years, according to the national business daily, Gazeta Mercantil. Monsanto invested a reported R$800,000 ($373,000) in December as part of the deal, covering the marketing rights in Brazil. Monsanto already has a licensing agreement with the Embrapa for its herbicide-tolerant Roundup Ready GM soybeans (Agrow No 509, p 19).
