EU upholds Hungary GMO (genetically modified organism) ban

EU Environment Ministers have rejected a bid by the European Commission to overturn Hungary's ban on Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant MON810 maize. The Commission submitted its proposal requiring Hungary to lift the ban to Ministers at the end of last year (Agrow No 509, p 10). This is the second time that Environment Ministers have supported national bans of EU-approved GM crops, following a similar vote in favour of Austria earlier this year (Agrow No 511, p 6).
