Argentine soya area record
The Argentine soybean area for the 2006/07 season will be a record 16.1 million ha, according to estimates from the Argentine Agriculture Ministry, the Sagpya. The figure represents a 5% increase on the previous year. The extra planting has replaced maize in some regions of the country due to the lack of moisture at the time of sowing. Good prices for soybean oil have also boosted its area, the Sagpya adds. The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) forecast a 2% rise last year, citing a combination of seed technology and no-till practices as creating a good mix of profit and sustainability (Agrow No 497, p 16).
