Indian GM (genetically modified) cotton seed price set

The Indian Seed Industry Association has decided to sell Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard II cotton for Rs 925 ($21) per packet of seed this season, while Bollgard I will be sold at Rs 750. The seed companies had been in discussions with the Andhra Pradesh state government, which last year forced a cut in GM cotton seed prices. In response to the government's move, Monsanto's Indian seed joint venture, Mahyco Monsanto Biotech, and other licencees to the technology agreed to keep Bollgard II prices below Rs 1,000, compared with a level of around Rs 1,400 in the 2006 season (Agrow No 513, p 15).
