Brazil lawyer seeks GMO hold up
Brazil's public prosecutor has requested the exclusion of six out of seven applications for commercial approval of genetically modified products, according to national media. The applications concern the commercialisation of GM maize events that are to be debated publicly this month (Agrow No 514, p 15). Bayer CropScience's glufosinate-tolerant LibertyLink maize is at the head of the queue for consideration, but applications from Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow AgroSciences and others are also to be debated. "The CTNBio alleges that the public does not understand the subjects deeply. If seven applications are for discussion, it would be even more difficult to understand," the prosecutor's office says.
