Colombia approves GM (genetically modified) maize
Colombia approved the import of genetically modified maize seed early this month and is to authorise the planting of other GM crops later this year. Growers in four regions that have undergone biosafety evaluations will be permitted to plant the maize. "We have just approved GM maize for use in four regions: Cordoba, Sucre, Huila and Tolima. Insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant GM seed can be bought," the Minister of Agriculture, Andres Felipe Arias, says. Two lines have the go-ahead: Monsanto's lepidopteran-resistant MON810 and DuPont's glufosinate-tolerant maize, the Ministry told Agrow.
