US judge halts sale of genetically modified alfalfa

A US judge has issued a preliminary injunction banning the sale of Monsanto's glyphosate-tolerant Roundup Ready alfalfa seed. The move follows last month's ruling that the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) acted illegally in failing to prepare an environmental impact statement before clearing the genetically modified crop for commercial release in 2005 (Agrow No 514, p 14). The injunction reverses the APHIS' deregulation decision and makes Roundup Ready alfalfa a regulated article again.
