EFSA (The European Food Safety Authority) queries temporary MRLs (maximum residue limits)

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that proposed temporary EU-wide maximum residue limits (MRLs) for 144 pesticide active ingredients could pose a potential consumer risk and may have to be lowered. The temporary limits, which are based on existing national MRLs, represent an interim step in the ongoing programme to harmonise MRLs across the EU. However, industry observers warned last year that the EFSA's risk assessment methods for these temporary MRLs could lead to the unnecessary loss of products and uses (Agrow No 507, p 9).
