New GM (genetically modified) rice case sparks US fears

US rice growers have called for tighter controls on research on genetically modified rice following the latest discovery of GM material in commercial rice seed. The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) issued emergency action notifications this month to prevent the planting or distribution of BASF's non-GM imidazolinone herbicide-tolerant Clearfield CL131 rice line. The action followed the discovery of unidentified GM material in the rice during testing by an independent laboratory.
