Monsanto in Chile GM (genetically modified) soya deal
Monsanto signed an agreement with Chile's Ministry of Agriculture, the Sagarpa, in March to expand the planting of genetically modified Roundup Ready soybeans in the country. The planting of the glyphosate-tolerant soybeans will start next season. The planted area will start at 5,000 ha and is expected to reach 20,000 ha in the medium term, the Sagarpa says. The production will be for exports. The Agriculture Minister, Alvaro Rojas, indicated that sales would be aimed at food and fuel markets.
