BIO (Biotechnology Industry Organization) adopts genetically modified organisms approvals policy
The US Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) has established a new policy over international approvals of genetically modified crops. The BIO's Product Launch Stewardship Policy encourages its members to seek regulatory approvals in major markets, including the US, Canada and Japan, before commercialising a GM crop. The policy is aimed at tackling "asynchronous" authorisations in different markets, which may disrupt trade. Syngenta's recent introduction of Agrisure RW maize in the US was criticised by grain groups because Syngenta failed to gain Japanese import approval before the launch (Agrow No 518, p 14).
