Germany OKs Monsanto GMO (genetically modified organisms) trials
The German federal office for consumer protection and food safety, the BVL, has approved Monsanto's application for field trials of genetically modified stacked-trait maize lines. The BVL approved the trials after it tightened GM crop rules last month. The move effectively banned Monsanto's MON810 maize, which is already approved in Germany. Under the new regulations, Monsanto has to submit an "up-to-date monitoring plan" on environmental effects before future sales, distribution and planting of the maize can take place (Agrow No 521, p 9).
