US eases GM (genetically modified) cotton IRM (insect resistance management) plans

The US EPA has accepted Monsanto's proposal that its genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard II cotton can be planted in many areas without a specific non-Bt cotton refuge. The Agency accepts that insect resistance management (IRM) can be achieved by alternative crops and weeds in areas where cotton bollworms (Heliothis armigera) and tobacco budworms (H virescens) are the main pests. Non-Bt cotton refuges will continue to be required for pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella) resistance management in Bollgard II crops.
