France plans GM (genetically modified) crop field trials
The French Ministry of Agriculture has approved 13 field trials of genetically modified crops under new rules that came into effect this year. It received 14 applications, of which 12 were for GM maize, one for tobacco and two for potatoes. They deal with crop resistance to diseases and insects, the Ministry says, as well as climatic plant stress. These trials will be the first under the government's new GMO law, which it transposed after a long delay (Agrow No 517, p 13).
