South America spray row escalates

Ecuador is to take Colombia to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, the Netherlands, over pesticide spraying. The Ecuadorian chancellor, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, charges Colombia with making a "toxic bomb" to eradicate coca along the countries' border. Colombia has sprayed herbicides, including glyphosate, in the area for several years (Agrow passim). Ecuador will prosecute its neighbour at the Court "even if it stops, definitively", any spraying. "We will not permit this aggression," President Rafael Correa says. Ecuador threatened such action earlier this year (Agrow No 513, p 14).
