New Zealand tightens 1080 controls
The New Zealand Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) has placed tigher controls on the use of the vertebrate pest control agent, sodium fluoroacetate (also known as 1080), following a lengthy review. The ERMA will monitor all aerial applications of 1080 from January 1st 2008. It has established improved notification requirements for aerial applications and set a maximum application rate of 30 g/ha. The ERMA has also called on the government to conduct research into alternatives to 1080 and into some areas of remaining concern.
