India OKs genetically modified food crop trials

The Indian Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has approved large-scale field trials on genetically modified insect-resistant Bt aubergines (brinjal) developed by Monsanto licensee Mahyco. The aubergines carry Monsanto's Cry1Ac gene conveying resistance to fruit and shoot borers. The approval allows trials at 11 locations in the country. The move represents the first clearance for extensive field trials on a GM food crop in India. To date, only Bt cotton has completed large-scale testing and been approved for commercial cultivation in the country.
