Indian Bt aubergine price boost

Indian farmers would be willing to purchase genetically modified insect-resistant aubergines for more than four times the price of conventional hybrid seed, forecast researchers from the German University of Hohenheim. The estimate reflects the economic importance of pests in Indian aubergine production, say Vijesh Krishna and Matin Qaim in a paper published in the journal, Food Policy. India recently approved large-scale field trials on Bt aubergines developed by Monsanto licensee Mahyco, representing the first extensive trials on a GM food crop in India (Agrow No 526, p 19).
