Philippines subsidises Bt maize

The Philippines Department of Agriculture (DA) has decided to take a crucial step in its policy of encouraging the adoption of Bt crops in the country. The Ministry's assistant secretary for operations, Dennis Araullo, has declared that farmers choosing to plant Bt maize instead of conventional hybrids would also be subsidised by the state. The subsidy, which amounts to Peso 1,200 ($27.80) per ha, is currently available to conventional hybrid maize growers.
