EFSA clears two more GM maize lines
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to two genetically modified maize lines for import, processing and use in food and feed. Monsanto's stacked-trait line combines the insect-resistant and glyphosate-tolerant MON88017 (YieldGard VT Rootworm/RR2) with the established insect-resistant MON810. The second GM maize line cleared by the EFSA is Syngenta's rootworm-resistant MIR604 ( Agrow No 526, p 16). The EFSA's opinions on the crops will go forward for consideration by the European Commission and EU member states. A separate application from Monsanto for single trait MON88017 is nearing the end of the EU registration process (see this issue).
