EU countries fail to agree on GM maize approvals
The EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health has once again failed to agree on whether to accept or reject European Commission proposals to approve genetically modified crops. The proposals concern the import and use of three maize lines: Monsanto's insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant MON88017 (YieldGard VT Rootworm/RR2 – Agrow No 567, p 12) and its insect-resistant MON89034 (YieldGard VT PRO – Agrow No 559, p 8); and Pioneer Hi-Bred International's stacked-trait line combining Dow AgroSciences/ DuPont's insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant 59122 (Herculex RW) with Monsanto's herbicide-tolerant NK603 ( Agrow No 558, p 12). The Commission will forward the proposals to EU Ministers. They have three months to reach a decision, otherwise the Commission is free to go ahead with its proposed approvals.
