Brazil intensifies agchem inspections
Brazil is intensifying pesticide inspections in the run-up to the planting season in October, the Ministry of Agriculture says. The Ministry is to inspect manufacturers and firms that have accreditation for pesticide treatments from this month until September. Uncovering contraband and fake pesticides is the aim, it says. From January to April 2009, the Ministry carried out 343 inspections in 20 Brazilian states. The co-ordinator general of the Ministry’s agricultural defence secretariat, the SDA, Luis Eduardo Rangel, underlines the importance of the work. “The registration of a pesticide is fundamental in guaranteeing food safety and the Ministry’s role is to attest to the efficacy of a product,” he says.
