China OKs metolachlor research
A Chinese project to research and develop the chemo-enzymatic synthesis of the chiral herbicide, metolachlor, has passed an appraisal by a committee of experts. The Jilin province science and technology development project was undertaken by researchers at Jilin University. The appraisal committee found that the project's use of “brand new” chemo-enzymatic synthesis technology to prepare S-metolachlor reached a standard set by international research of a similar nature, and asserted that the project will help speed up the modernisation of China's pesticide production. Metolachlor is among the world's top ten pesticides by sales volume, notes the Jilin provincial Science and Technology Department.
