Seizure of illegal agchems leaps in Brazil
The seizure of illegal pesticides in Brazil jumped by a quarter in the first seven months of 2009 to 10.5 tonnes, the Brazilian agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag, says. They included the capture of 2.5 tonnes in July in two police operations. Some 50 tonnes of counterfeit products were taken out of circulation in the 12 months to July 31st. The association calculates that some 370 tonnes of unregistered or “falsified” products have been apprehended in Brazil since 2001. That was when the sector launched a drive against the use of such products, the Sindag says. A total of 14 people have been found guilty of dealing in illegal pesticides, and another 450 are pending judgements in the courts.
