Uruguay restricts fipronil use
Uruguay has imposed new use restrictions on use of the insecticide, fipronil. The restrictions are to avoid “death or harm to beneficial insects”. The new rules only allow for use of granular bait products based on the active ingredient for the control of ants, and seed treatments on rice. Import restrictions will only allow the same types of products. Exceptions on import restrictions of the ai include allowing entry if: it is to be formulated into an ant bait or seed treatment as above; or it is under a temporary admission for formulation before export. China placed heavy restrictions on fipronil use earlier this year because of the “high risk” it poses to aquatic crustaceans and bees ( Agrow No 564, p 21), while some EU countries such as Italy have suspended use ( Agrow No 553, p 12). Products already approved can be sold until August 29th 2009.
