India develops GM food allergenicity protocols

The Indian Ministry of Science and Technology’s department of biotechnology has prepared a series of draft protocols for the assessment of potential allergenicity of novel proteins introduced into genetically modified food crops. The protocols would provide a framework for performing bioinformatics search for amino acid sequence homology comparisons with known allergens, and for literature search to evaluate whether the gene source was a proven cause of allergies. A number of GM food crops are expected to be launched in India over the next three years ( Agrow No 572, p 22). The protocols have been posted on the department’s website for public comment until August 31st at: http://igmoris.nic.in/Bioinformatics_Protocol.pdf.
