Dow unveils 14 SmartStax maize hybrids
Dow AgroSciences’ seed subsidiary, Mycogen, has launched 14 genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant SmartStax maize hybrids in the US. SmartStax maize was developed jointly by Dow and Monsanto. It received US approval in July ( Agrow No 573, p 23). The eight-gene stack is resistant to a range of above- and below-ground pests and is tolerant to the herbicides, glyphosate and glufosinate-ammonium. The companies plan to introduce the maize on 3-4 million acres (1.2-1.6 million ha) in 2010.
