China tackles POPs

China has started a five-year programme to eliminate the effects of several insecticide persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on the environment. The programme was formally launched in Beijing last month. By 2015, China plans to have completed the safe treatment of presently-identified POPs, eliminating at least 10,000 tonnes of insecticide POPs and installing POP treatment facilities that conform to standards defined by the Stockholm Convention on POPs, which came into force in 2004 ( Agrow No 443, p 19).
