Origin Biotech to license new glyphosate tolerance trait
Chinese seed company Origin Agritech’s subsidiary, Origin Biotechnology, has entered into an agreement with the Institute of Microbiology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Chinese company Sichuan Biotech Engineering to develop and market a novel gene expressing tolerance to the herbicide, glyphosate. The CAS and Sichuan Biotech own the rights to the internally-developed technology, which has been evaluated in greenhouse and field trials but not commercialised. It is protected by patents in China and the US. For the duration of the patents, Origin Biotechnology will have exclusive worldwide rights to develop and sell maize, soybean, rice, cotton and canola products that contain the trait. Origin Biotechnology will also receive exclusive rights to sub-license to third parties, as well as improve and further develop the glyphosate tolerance gene.
