Spanish seek alternative to garlic agchems

Spanish researchers are seeking to develop new tools to detect garlic pathogens, in a bid to implement alternative control systems to pesticide use. Scientists from the Polytechnic University of Madrid and the national agricultural research institute, the INIA, have teamed up with the agricultural co-operative, Coopman, “to improve the plant’s resistance to diseases caused by viruses or fungi”. Coopman has set up the company, Culviman, to “optimise the vegetative propagation of garlic through in vitro cultivation” and so supply virus-free garlic seeds.
