EU approval decision on MIR604 maize delayed

A decision on EU approval for imports of Syngenta's genetically modified corn rootworm-resistant MIR604 maize line has been deferred to EU Ministers. The move follows the failure of the EU Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health to agree on whether to accept or reject the European Commission's proposal to approve the crop. The GM maize was given safety clearance for import, processing and use in food and feed by the European Food Safety Authority earlier this year ( Agrow No 573, p 11). MIR604 joins all other GM crops in recent years to experience delays in the EU authorisation process. The resulting shortage of EU-approved imports is a matter of growing concern for the European feed industry (see this issue).
