EU industry studies food prices
Crop productivity and the control of pests and diseases is the key to containing food prices, says the European Crop Protection Association (ECPA). The Association commissioned a survey that highlighted how food prices in the current economic downturn are affecting consumer purchases. Fruit and vegetables are most affected, with 27% of French consumers buying less compared with last year, followed by 20% in the UK, 16% in Poland and 15% in Spain. Fruit and vegetables are particularly susceptible to pest and disease attack, and 61% of Europe's crops would be destroyed without effective management, the ECPA points out.
