Pesticides decline in US Corn Belt streams

Concentrations of several major pesticides declined or stayed the same in selected streams in the US Corn Belt between 1996 and 2006, according to a new study by the US Geological Survey. The scientists monitored 11 pesticides at up to 31 stream sites for two time periods, 1996-2002 and 2000-2006. The pesticides studied were: the herbicides, acetochlor, alachlor, atrazine, cyanazine, EPTC, metolachlor, metribuzin, prometon and simazine; and the insecticides, chlorpyrifos and diazinon.
