US researchers seek cassava virus resistance
The US Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded a $1.3 million grant to the University of Arizona (Tucson) to advance the development of cassava with resistance to cassava brown streak virus. The move follows the completion of a first draft of the cassava genome by an international consortium. The US scientists aim to develop a database of markers to identify genes involved in many important traits. They will collaborate with researchers in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania in using the markers to identify resistance to the disease.
