EU lowers MRLs for 11 pesticides
The European Commission has lowered the maximum residue limits (MRLs) for 11 active ingredients in certain crops because of safety concerns. The 11 ais are: the insecticides, dimethoate, fenamiphos, methamidophos, methomyl, omethoate, oxydemeton-methyl and thiodicarb; the fungicides, fenarimol, procymidone and vinclozolin; and the plant growth regulator, ethephon. Dimethoate, ethephon, fenamiphos and methomyl have all been re-registered in the EU. Fenarimol, methamidophos and procymidone were re-registered in 2007 for a restricted 18-month period, which has since expired. The other ais were not re-registered and have been withdrawn, although some essential uses were permitted for omethoate.
