Kenya to debut GM cotton by February
Kenya is edging towards the adoption of genetically modified cotton, the African newspaper, Business Daily, reports. Trials of bollworm-resistant varieties are reportedly in the final stages and expected to be completed by February next year. Researchers also seek to introduce the seed onto the market in February. The GM cotton allows pesticide applications to be cut from 12 to three, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute scientist Dr Charles Waturu is reported as saying. The biosafety law, passed in February this year ( Agrow No 562, p 17), should come into force next February, the newspaper adds. .
