EFSA stands by safety assessment of LLRice62

The EU safety clearance of Bayer CropScience’s glufosinate-tolerant LLRice62 rice line remains valid, despite submissions from environmentalist groups urging the EU authorities not to approve the crop, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Greenpeace presented a petition to the European Commission in October that raised concerns about the environmental risk assessment ( Agrow No 579, p 12). The Commission asked the EFSA to review a scientific paper on gene flow in rice that was included in the petition. The Authority concludes that the paper provides no new scientific evidence that would change the previous evaluation of LLRice62. It points out that the safety clearance given to LLRice62 in 2007 was for an application for import, processing and use in food and feed only, not cultivation.
