Another delay on an EU GM crop approval
EU Agriculture Ministers have failed to agree on whether to accept or reject a European Commission proposal to approve the import of Syngenta’s genetically modified rootworm-resistant MIR604 maize. The dossier has been returned to the Commission, which is now free to rubber-stamp its own proposal ( Agrow No 579, p 11). The pattern repeats the delays seen for all EU GM crop approvals in recent years. The Commission will be under pressure from the feed industry to complete the MIR604 approval quickly, in the light of continued disruption to imports. Three other GM maize lines in a similar situation were rapidly signed off by the Commission recently ( Agrow ibid).
